Description | 'The intensity of the earth's magnetic force reduced to an absolute measure'. The German version of this abstract read at the Royal Society at Gottingen [Lower Saxony, Germany] was given by Gauss to Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, PRS who requested that it be read to the Royal Society. This English translation was prepared by the Foreign Secretary [Charles Dietrich Eberhard Konig] and read at a meeting.
Covering sheet includes explanation in pencil by Gauss, 'All the pencil corrections to be made in composing - and should those pages now crossed out with pencil be omitted'. An ink inscription below reads 'To be copied previous to being read. C. K.'. Below this, in pencil, is a third inscription reaing 'Take no notice of the pencil marks at all'. Ink and pencil annotations and deletions appear throughout. Most deletions still appear intact in the published abstract.

Whilst the Royal Society did not published Gauss' paper in full, this abstract was published in Abstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London [later Proceedings of the Royal Society].
