Title | Unpublished manuscript, 'Some farther remarks on the means of procuring a steady light in coal mines without the danger of explosion' by W [William] Reid Clanny |
Date | 25 November 1815 |
Description | This paper is a continuation of Clanny's paper published in volume 103 of Philosophical Transactions titled 'On the means of procuring a steady light in coal mines without the danger of explosions'. Clanny recounts explosions that took place in mines in Tyne and Wear [England] since the publication of his paper and points to poor ventillation as the primary cause, listing five secondary causes including a buildup of gases within the mine. He explains that his previous invention of a lamp that enclosed a candle in a bulb of glass would be unlikely to help in reducing explosions, as the frequent occurrence of falling rocks could smash the glass, allowing the flame to come into contact with the inflammable air. He has improved the design of his lamp so that if the bulb of the lamp is 'upset' in any way, the flame will be immediately extinguished. He then includes details of trials of his new lamp in various mines.
