| Description | Lecount provides explanations for the variation of the compass in ships, particularly warships, drawing on observations made on ships in St Helena. He accords the higher incidence of magnetic variation in these ships to the presence of horizontal iron bars in the form of guns, bolts, hoops, and other objects on board the ships.
