TitleLetter from Daines Barrington to Charles Blagden at Mrs Nelmes, St James Churchyard
Date26 June 1775
DescriptionReports arrival of Captain Cook at the Cape on 22 March, in a voyage of 28 months has not lost a single person by sickness and this is attributed by Forster to sower-crowt [sic] and wort from malt. They have discovered many new islands and Forster has collected 260 new plants and 200 new animals. The landscape painter [William Hodges] has sent over many views of the newly discovered islands which he is told are masterly. "The Oataheitee [Tahitian] man was put on shore again and proved incorrigably stupid which Captain Cook says he is the more sorry for as Omai is a very great blackguard". Advises Blagden not to tell this to "his patient" as he may call Captain Cook out to duel behind Buckingham House [St James' Park]. In a postscript adds that Captain Cook found Kendal's watch together with the Lunar Tables a most faithful guide.
