TitleLetter from Cyril Longhurst, Secretary, National Antarctic Expedition, 1 Savile Row, to Sir William Huggins, President, Royal Society, Burlington House
Date9 May 1902
DescriptionReviews the request on behalf of the President of the Royal Geographical Society to agree on the amount to be awarded to Mr. George Murray for his services to the National Antarctic Expedition. A recommendation of £400 was made by Captain Scott to cover Murray's expenses when it was thought that there would be a prolonged absence from England. The committee understood from Scott that this amount was merely an advance and should not be understood as an instalment. Had the committee known that Mr Murray's absence would have been much shorter they would not have issued so large an expense.

The committee recommended the sum to be awarded to Mr Murray to be £500, but this would have been the same salary as Professor Gregory would have received. Mr. Murray's payment was ultimately made up of: Professor Gregory's salary from the 14 February to 15 May 1901 (£81), an honorarium payment of £200 and out of pocket expenses at £56, a total payment of £337. A similar letter has been addressed to the President of the Royal Geographical Society.

The back page notes that Mr. George Murrary is to be appointed to the Director of the Civilian Scientific Staff and sets out the conditions on which this is to be arranged.
