| Title | Copy letter from Clements R [Robert] Markham, 21 Eccleston Square, to Mr Ramsay |
| Date | 14 June 1903 |
| Description | Markham has been informed of the meeting between the Royal Society and [Arthur James} Balfour, and Balfour's decision to acquit the Society from any blame in the matter of the relief ship for the 'Discovery' expedition. Markham states that the Royal Geographical Society should is also innocent of blame, as the two Societies were only informed of the need for a relief ship in May 1901.
The organizers of the expedition, including Markham, were aware of the need of a relief ship from the beginning, but the Societies in general did not, as they merely 'promoted the despatch of the expedition'. Markham does not think it was necessary to inform the Government of the first relief ship [in 1902), as it was always intended this would be funded by private subscriptions. A 'serious and probably fatal disaster' would have occured if a relief ship had not been sent. |
