CreatorRichthofen; Baron; Ferdinand Freiherr von (1833-1905); German geographer
RecipientMarkham; Sir; Clements Robert (1830-1916); President of the Royal Geographical Society
Date29 March 1903
DescriptionOffers congratulations for the 'glowing news' of the 'Discovery' expedition, 'and particularly to the plucky performance of Captain [Robert Falcon] Scott, Dr [Edward Adrian] Wilson and Lieutenant [Ernest] Shackleton' in setting a new record for southern latitude reached. Scott particularly impressed the Baron when they met. Also expresses excitement at the prospect of other discoveries, including more knowledge of the volcanoes discovered by [James Clark] Ross's expedition. Also supports the wise decision to send out the 'Morning' as a relief ship.
