TitleCopy letter from William Huggins, President of the Royal Society, to A J [Arthur James] Balfour, First Lord of the Treasury
CreatorHuggins; Sir; William (1824-1910); British astronomer
RecipientBalfour; Arthur James; first Earl of Balfour (1848-1930); British Prime Minister and philosopher
Date28 May 1903
DescriptionThe Council of the Royal Society is concerned by Balfour's recent statement in the House of Commons. The Council has been unable to find any indication that the Royal Society has ever failed to provide Government with information about the Antarctic Expedition in its possession. Notes that a resolution was passed by the Joint Antarctic Committee in 1900, stating that official correspondence concerning the Antarctic Expedition needed to be signed by the Presidents of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Society. The Council believes that Balfour's opinion is based on a misunderstanding, and requests a private interview to discuss the matter.
