Description | Notes that Professor [John Bretland] Farmer came to speak to Sir Archibald Geikie after the meeting of the Government Grant Committee on 16 May, and recalls what happened: That Farmer dissociated himself from the offensive charges made by [Charles] Walker, but that he had observed friction between Walker and [J. E. S.] Moore on one side, and the Assistant Secretary [Robert Harrison] on the other. That Farmer expressed that there seemed some ground for Walker's dissatisfaction, given the large price difference between the estimate that the Royal Society gave for the engravings, and the estimate that Walker (who has had considerable experience in the preparation of scientific illustrations) obtained. Farmer observed that it seemed the learned Societies were sometimes charged a maximum price. That Geikie pointed out that there remained the serious charge which Walker brought against the staff of the Royal Society, which needed to be retracted and apologised for. Farmer endeavoured to carry out this arrangement. |
