TitleLetter from John Charles Philip, Royal Society, to [William Bate] Hardy
Date5 July 1922
DescriptionReplying to Hardy's letter on War Office queries relating to the b-Eucaine claim of King, Mason and Schryver he has been looking again at the files. The Sectional Committee on Chemistry communicated with heads of department not with individual workers and he refers to the terms of the problem set out in his letter to Professor Orton at Bangor in 1915. Instructions were provided if the department head was willing to participate. A number of suggestions for imporvements were received and circulated. No definite problem was 'set' to individuals by the Committee. The Head of Organic Chemistry at Imperial College was asked to assist in b-Eucaine work, on the preparation of paraldehyde. Professor J.F. Thorpe seems to have secured the help of King, Mason and Schryver. It was during the course of this that the improvement was found and made known to the co-operating institutions.
