Description | The letter of Sir Charles Lucas has been considered, with Council commissioning a report from the Committee on Solar Research. The Royal Society strongly believes that a solar observatory in Australia should be established and equipped, or that an existing observatory should be provided with the means to make observations. This on the understanding that any such work should not interfere with the International Astrographic Catalogue. The Society suggests that new solar observations might be undertaken at the Observatory and University of Adelaide, which is not affilated to the Catalogue. Valuable work could be done in Australia on this topic. |
