Title | Letter from Douglas Mawson, Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911, 9 Regent Street, London, to Sir William Crookes |
Date | 18 July 1914 |
Description | Noting Council's awareness of the expedition and a previous grant. The expedition is now concluded. All proceeds from public lectures and cine film will go to clearing liabilities. The scientific results of the expedition were voluminous. They were in Antarctica for two winters and three summers, occupying three land stations, with the ship continuing scientific investigations at sea. He would like to place before Crookes a detailed summary of the scientific work, but can only give an outline, enclosed. The expedition covered a wider ground than any previous one, they were first to use wireless telegraphy, useful in immediate scientific comparisons and in meteorology. The preparation and printing of the scientific results will cost not less than £10,000 and 70 specialists will be needed for a volume on the collections. He appeals to the Royal Society for support. A discussion of the work will take place at the British Association in Australia. |
