a. That Council at its meeting on 6 October 1960 had decided that the salary range for Category D of Royal Society research appointments had been increased (with effect from 1 January 1960) to £950 x £100 to £1150 per annum in three yeaers and exceptionally to £1350 per annum in five years, and that the salary of Dr D T Edmonds for the year beginning 1 October 1960, when he took up his appointment, had been £1050 per annum.

c. That the recommendatio of the committee when consulted by correspondence in May 1962 (minute 1 of PSR/1(65) had been approved by Council at its meeting ofn 17 May 1962, except that, as subseqently recommended by the Chairman after consultation with some members of the committee, Dr Edmond's stipend had been fixed at £1250 per annum from 1 October 1962.

5. Advertisement of Mackinnon Research Studentship, 1965
It was reported that owing to the small balance in the Mackinnon Reserch Fund, it had not been possible to advertise another Mackinnon Research Studentship for appointment to begin on 1 October 1964; that Council had decided in February 1965 to supplement the Mackinnon Fund with money from another source to enable a new appointment to be advertised from 1 October 1965 (in Category D which since 1 April 1964 had been £1300 x £100 to £1500 and exceptionally to £1700 per annum); and that after consultation with the chairman and advertisement had been issued and circulated to members of the Physical Sciences Research Committee in March 1965.

6. Mackinnon Research Studentship - application 1965
The committee considered 33 applications for the Mackinnon Research Studentship, 12 of which had been reproduced in full for consideration by the committee (PS/2(65) previously circulated). It was noted that the application of R P Wayne had been withdrawn, and members of the committee indicated that they did not wish to consider further any of the applications which had not been reproduced in full. After discussion, 6 applicants were eliminated and detailed consideration was given to the applications from P E Baker, A Corney, J E Field, R A Stradling, and P J S Williams. The applications from A Corney and J E Field were then eliminated and a vote was taken between the applications of P E Baker, R A Stradling and P J S Williams, after which it was Resolved, - That the following be recommendatins to Council:
a. That the Mackinnon Reserch Studentship for two years in the first instance from 1 October 1965 at a stipend of £1400 per annum rising to £1500 per annum from 1 October 1966, with provision for superannuation, National Health Insurance, State Pension, and grant for reprints of £10 per annum, be awarded to Mr P E Baker to carry out volcanological and petrological investigations on island-arcs and mid-ocean ridges at the department of geology and mineralogy, University of Oxford, and the he be given permission to undertake not more than six hours of teaching or demonstrating per week and retaining any ad hoc tuition fees in connexion with such teaching or demonstrating.
b. That Dr P J S Williams be regarded as proxime accessit.

7. Advertisement of Mr and Mrs John Jaffe Donation Research Fellowship, 1965
It was noted that Council had decided in February 1965 that a Mr and Mrs John Jaffe Donation Research Fellowship in the physical sciences should be advertised for an appointment to begin on 1 October 1965 in Category C (£2150 x £100 to £2550 per annum); that, as there was no standing committee to recommend appointments supported by the Jaffe Fund the Physical Secretary had proposed to the Chairman of the Physical Sciences Research Committee that his committee should consider the applications received in 1965; and that the chairman had agreed to the proposal and that another four Fellows (Professor D Gabor, Professor D H Hey, Professor W H McCrea and Sir Eric Rideal) should be invited to attend the meeting of the Physical Sciences Research Committee to advise on the applications as well as those for the Mackinnon Research Studentship.

8. Mr and Mrs John Jaffe Donation Research Fellowship - applications 1965
The committee considered 17 applications for a Mr and Mrs John Jaffe Donation Research Fellowship, 7 of which had been reproduced in full for consideration by the committee (PS/3(65) previously circulated). Members of the committee indicated that they did not wish to consider further any of the applications which had not been reproduced in full. After full discussion of the 7 applications reproduced in full (from E R Bucjle, N Dombrowski, J W Elder, R F Griffin, R D Guthrei, R Horsnell and H O A Meyer) five applications were eliminated and a vote was taken, with Professor G K Batchelor abstaining, between the applications of J W Elder and R F Griffin, after which it was decided to recommend to Council the appointment of R F Griffin, although the view was expressed that the starting salary (£2150) seemed a little high for someone of his age and experience (age 29 years 10 months, Ph.D 1960, Junior Assistant Observer at Cambridge Observatories since 1961, and Research Fellow at St John's College Cambridge since 1962).

The committee agredd also that the attentio of Council should be drawn to the application from R Horsnell, Department of Mechanical Engineeering, University of Nottingham (whose proposed reserch programme was 'A study of the use of automatic computation in the development of management policies for the manufacture of capital equipment.' ) and that it shoudl be suggested that Professor A G Smith (Department of Mechanical Engineering, University fo Nottingham) might be informed by the chairman of teh committee's interest in the application and its opionion that the Science Reserch Council should be asked to suppor it, and it was Resolved -
a. That a Mr and Mrs John Jaffe Donation Research Fellowship for two years in the first instance from 1 October 1965 at a stipend of £2150 per annum rising to £2250 per annum from 1 October 1966, with Pension and grant for reprints of £30 per annum on (i) direct photoelectric measurement of stellar radial velocities and (ii) photometric surveys of stellar spectra at very high resolution at the observatories, University of Cambridge.
b. That the chairman be authorized to write to Professor A G Smith to inform him of the committee's interest in the application of Dr R Horsnell and its opinion that the Science Research Councikl should be asked to support his work. '
