Description | Committee origins in meeting of 12 July 1966 of an exploratory committee appointed by the Royal Society and the Historical Manuscipts Commission which had recommended the appointment of a standing advisory committee representative of both bodies.
Recommendation had been accepted by both bodies. As a Standing committee, this committee would remain in being until and unless both the Royal Society and the Historical Manuscripts Commission agreed to dissolve it. As an advisory committee, it would not act independently but would make recommendations for action by the two parent bodies. In framing such recommendations the committee would have to take account of their requirements in money and in manpower, neither of which at present was easy to obtain.
