Terms of reference read.
Mr Carpenter's letter was read recounting the plan of proposed work, starting in July and working in a south westerley direction, exploring the bottom in depths of 400 to 800 fathoms with additional casts of the dredge with temperature soundings at greater depths. Proposed physical and zoological survey to be carried out especially by the Straits of Gibraltar, to exdamine the currents between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and the relation beween the fauna of the two sees. Discussion concerning scientific personnel of the expedition, and route along the Mediterranean to end at Malta.
The committee resolved that the Council should recommend the proposed expedition, conducted as described in Dr Carpenter's letter, for the favourable consideration of the Admiralty, with a view to obtaining Government assistance as previously.
A 'Photometric Apparatus for ascertaining the intensity of light at various depths ' was to be constructed by Mr Siemens.
Dr Frankland suggested by Dr Carpenter as being able to suggest an apparatus for obtaining gases in the deep water; resolved to invite Dr Fankland to join the Committee. |
