Committee established following a letter frorm T Archer Hirst, General Secretary of the British Association on receipt of a resolution referred by the General Committee of the British Association at Liverpool to their Council on 10 December 1870. Also a RS Council minute 19 January 1871 'resolving, that the communication from the British Association respecting the Kew Observatory be referred for consideration and report to a Committee' (personnel listed)

Motion by Colonel Strange Mr De la Rue that 'Whilst the President and Council of the Royal Society will doubtless feel deeply interested in the continuance of the Scientific work now carried on at Kew the Committee were not prepared to recommend the Council to undertake the responsibility of the maintenance of the Establishment' carried.
Motion discussed and amended regretting they cannot recommend to Council to accept Mr Gassiot's generous offer .
