The application to the Admiralty by President and Council read, to which reply requesting the numbers of individuals and the amoount of baggage was received, and forwarded to Mr Lockyer, who telegraphed back an answer [details given]
Professor Stokes had written, not telegraphed, Signor Cacciatore.
Mr Brooke reported that Mr Friswell's firm could not spare him.
£300 had been voted from the Donation Fund to 'defray the cost of instruments to be supplied to the Eclipse Expedition and the expenses connected therewith. '
The appliction to the First Lord of the Treasury by the President and Council was read.
A telegram from the Viceroy of India to the India Office, communicated to Mr Lockyer, was read, [Wording listed] and resolved Mr Lockyer to confer with Mr De La Rue regarding an answer to the India Office.
Three letters from Mr Winstanley offering to go as a volunteer photographer were read, but resolved that 'from want of necessary instruments, the propositon of Mr Winstanley cannot be entertained.'
Mr Janssen's offer to accompany the Expedition and requirine transport only from Singapore to Bangkok was communicated by Mr Lockyer, and resolved that the Foreign Secretary to write to Mr Dumas to say Mr Janssen's services would be very acceptable.
Resolved;
1. Sir George Airy to communicate with the officers of the Transit of Venus Expedition who may be within reach to enquire if any of them could be available for the expedition, and if any Sappers acquainted with photgraphy
2. Sir George Airy requested to lend the equatorial mounting of one of the photoheliogrphs of the Transit of Venus Expedition if it should arrive in time
3. An offer from Captain Barnes to lend a 6 inch equatorial accepted provisionally
4. Professor Stokes to communicate with the Siamese Consul regarding the requirements mentioned in Mr Lockyer's letter.
5. Mr De La Rue be authorized to purchase a 4 1/2 inch short focus mirror, if it shoudl be found suitable for low latitudes
6. Mr Scott appointed a member of the Expedition for Siam
7. Mr De La Rue authorized to ordfer one or two enlarging and copying cameras
8. Mr De La Rue to superintend the photgraphic equipment |
