Brief account of what the Meteorological Committe had done given by Mr De La Rue
Apologies for absence from Dr Guy and the assistant of Reverend R Main, and letter expressing his views in his absence from illness by Professor Balfour Stewart
Resolved; 1. ' That the Committee are of opinion that meteorlogical observations should be continued in England by means of selfrecording instruments; also that the number already existing is not in excess of the requirements of meteorology. The Committee are not prepared, however, to say that all the existing self-recording observatories are placed in the best possible positions, but it must be borne in mind that the selection of present positions was guided in a great measure by there being existing establishments to which they could be attached. 2. That the continuous record, even if not maintained indefinitely, should be carried on at least until a fair comparison can be made with the cycles of solar spots. 3. That so long as continuous records are made, they ought to be rendered available to the public and to scientific men. ' |
