DescriptionPresent at the meeting of the Circumpolar Committee: William Spottiswoode, President, in the Chair; Dr Rae; Mr Scott; Profesor Stokes. Captain Dawson, who has been appointed to take charge fo the expedition, also present.

Letters read from the Treasury of 5 April and the Secretary of the Hudson's Bay Company of 18 Aaapril.

All applications for post of Superintendent of the Expedition handed by Mr Scott to Colonel Hughes at their meeting. Captain Henry Philip Dawson appointed, and immediately instructed to go to Kew and make arrangements for attendance at the Observatory, and that, having visited Mr Whipple, he was prepared to begin his studies immediately.

Resolved - ' To apply to the Geographical Society for the loan of instruments [See Letter Book April 20. p. 35]

Meteorological Council requested to advise on actinometeric observations.

Captain Dawson suggeted that spectroscopic (photgraphic) observations would be desirable. He was requested to confer with Captain Abney and to send in an estimate. '
