Action on applications for reservation dealt with since the last meeting reported and confimed; Best, Stanley S; Cameron, A M; Carr, H E; Coleman, F C; Cunningham, J C; Graham, James; Horton, Edward; Humphries, H B P; Hutton, J S; Hughes, J O; Jackson, V G; Levey, A E; Palmer, Gilbert; Rigby, Thomas; Salmon, A E ; Self, P A W; Stamp, C A; Spiers, F S; Swann, H; Thomas, F; Turner, L G; Sinkinson, E; French, L; Howlett, L H; Godfrey, C; Haward, W A; King, W; Sarjant, R J

3. Discussed the question of principle in deciding these applications, and it was agreed;
3.1 To reserve all highly trained Chemists from Military Service without reference to their employment for National purposes or otherwise
3.2 To issue Certificates of Exemption to all approved Analytical Consulting and Research chemists without conditions as to the mode of their employment.
Further agreed that the Committee should refrain from taking any action in the case of men who are essentially "works chemists2 and who are provided for under a separate heading of Reserved Occupations.

Certain and certain typical cases taken for decision;

Middleton, Herbert - on the Chemical Staff of the Technical College Bradford; Case to be referred to Board of Education, as it does not come within the definition of the Royal Society's powers.

Ratcliffe, H - Analytical chemist and works manager for The Leeds Phosphate Works Ltd; To be exempted as a Research Chemist

Lodge, Edward - Employed as an assistant chemist in the Synthetic Phenol Department of British Dyes Ltd; Royal Society's letter of 16 March, stating that the badge held by Mr Lodge is sufficient was approved.

Elias, D H - Employed as Works Chemnist and Analyst by the British Leather Cloth Manufacturing Co. Ltd.; Works Chemist, and therefore not within the powers of intervention of the Royal Society.

Mummery, C S - Employed as Works and Research Chemist by Messrs Madderton & Co. Ltd., Paint, Colour, Varnish & Chemical Manufacturers; To be exempted as a Research Chemist

Atack, F E; Emerson, F W; Wray, E - all employed by Messrs. Claus & Co. Ltd., Aniline Dye & Chemical MAnufacturers, as Research chemists; to be exempted as Research Chemists.
