Description | `Present; Sir Frank Dyson in the chair; Dr C Chree; Mr J H Jeans; Sir Gerald Lenox-Conyngham; Sir Arthur Schuster; Dr G C Simpson; Sir Gilbert Walker; Professor S Chapman; Dr A Crichton Mitchell, Co-opted member of the Sub-Committe
1. Read and signed minutes of the meeting of 21 October
2. ' Acting as the Sub-Committee appointed at thee meeting of 21 October, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Jeans, seconded by Sir Gilbert Walker; - That this committee reports: - (a) In addition to Alibagh, three observatories at least are necesary for the efficient determination of the varying magnetic conditions of India. (b) If not more than three observatories can be maintained the position of these three should be roughly that of the observatories existing in 1920. (Dehra Dun, Kodaikanal and Toungoo)
For scientific reasons it is important that the observatories should be as far apart as possible; consequently, if for any reason it is found necessary to change the position of the Dehra Dun Observatory, it would be desirable that the Observatory should be placed further to the North-West, in the direction of Quetta or Peshawar.
In the same way if the observatory at Kodaikanal be moved, the Committee suggest that it should be moved further south, and the possibility of establishing an observatory in Ceylon might be considered.
In the event of funds being available, the Committee wish to emphasise the scientific importance of establishing a further observatory as far North-West as possible. (c) The Committee strongly recommend the publication annually of hourly values of the three magnetic elements at each observatory. (d) The Repeat Stations are not of the same scientific importance as the observatories; and the extent of their reduction could be left to the considertion of the Indian Survey.
3. Acting on the powers delegated to them by the Indian Observatories Committee, it was resolved to transmit the substance of the above to the Government of India. ' |
