Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Justus Liebig, Johann Muller and J. C. F. Sturm were elected Foreign Members. Professor Olbers noted as deceased, the new vacancy would be filled at next Council. Letter from Mr. Few regarding the Mablethorpe tithes. Few authorized to offer the appellants £4 per acre on engaging to bear the Society harmless from further costs in the appeal. Applications from John Caldecott and William Jory Henwood for extensions to the period for admission to the Fellowship, granted. Dr. Hake applied to copy his paper and drawings on the spleen, granted. Captain Washington applied for the 1830 volume of Philosophical Transactions for the Royal Geographical Society, granted. Mr. Barlow applied to take fifty copies from plates illustrating his 1833 paper, granted. Sir John Herschel reported for the Committee on Physics regarding Mr. Trotter's letter, stating that a person should not be attached to the Niger expedition solely for the puproses of magnetic observations, but in the event of a person being part of the expedition for general scientific purposes, it would be desirable to instruct them in magnetic observation; the committee also noted an extra set of instruments being available to the East India Company, an observatory should be set up in Aden, the President to make appplication. Resolved that Mr. Lubbock should prepare the Report of the Committee on Physics for Council, with a view to publication. List of bills for printing, engraving and paper ordered to be paid. |
