Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr. Daniel reported on behalf of the joint Committee of Astronomy and Physics, adopting a resolution from a sub-committee: on basement rooms at the Royal Astronomical Society being suitable for pendulum experiments, an application to the Queen's remembrancer gave possession. Letter from Henrt Raper, Royal Astronomical Society, 22 June 1841, to Peter Mark Roget, Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: noting the rooms suitable for pendulum experiments and offering any assistance. Applications from Earl de Grey and George S. Byng for extensions to the period for admission to the Royal Society, granted. Mr. Daniell reported a resolution on behalf of the Committee for Physics that the buildings of the Observatory at Kew were available and that the Society should acquire them for scientific purposes, resolution adopted. Letter from W. E. Shuckard, Royal Society Library, 24 June 1841, to Sir John William Lubbock, full text entered into the mintes: requesting remuneration of labour and time for work on the Catalogue of Miscellaneous Literature, an estimate for altering shelves in the Library, and the services of Mr. Charles Tuckett as a manual assistant, resolved that Shuckard is compensated for the catalogue at a rate of £3 per sheet. Reports and papers on the Magnetical Observatories at Madras [Chennai] and Singapore. Mr. Roberton granted leave of absence in August. Mr. Newport's paper on Myriapoda to be the Bakerian Lecture. Royal Medals in 1844 to be given for papers in mathematics and chemistry. |
