Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from Sir John Barrow, Admiralty, 26 June 1841, to Peter Mark Roget, full text entered into the minutes: giving thanks for the report on the chronometers of Eiffe, Molyneux, and Parkinson and Frodsham. Lettre from Earl Munster. requesting the loan of oriental manuscripts to Dr. Hermann Brockhaus of Jena: the reply to be that Council cannot comply, but would facilitate copying. Dr. Mantell applied for permission to take 100 extra copies of two papers in Philosophical Transactions, granted. Letter from Charles Few, Covent Garden, 13 July 1841, to Sir John William Lubbock, full text entered into the minutes: on Wintringham's legacy, the Foundling Hospital will not compromise without beng able to retain £100, putting the Royal Society at heavy expense; Few suggests making an offer in the matter of Royal Society vs. Loscombe which would need to be confirmed by the Master of the Rolls, authorised. Letter from the Reverend W. C. Cotton offering to make observations in New Zealand if he is provided with instruments and a letter from R. C. Moody, Lieutenant Governor of the Falkland Islands, offering sevices for the collection of data, both referred to the Committee of Physics. Publication of Supplemental Instructions for the use of Magnetical Observatories approved. Letter from Professor Orlebar of Bombay [Mumbai] expressing doubts on his ability to work magnetical apparatus without further instruments and aid, referred to the Directors of the East India Company. List of bills for payment, including Grubb for magnetometers. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended to the Society to serve in the ensuing year. Suggestions for the award of Royal Medals to be obtained from the Committees of Mathematics and Chemistry and from all Scientific Committees for the award of the Copley Medal. |
