DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Neil Arnott; Francis Baily; Richard Bright; Samuel Hunter Christie; John Frederic Daniell; William Henry Fitton; William Hopkins; Peter Mark Roget; Lieutenant-Colonel William Henry Sykes; Charles Wheatstone; Reverend Robert Willis; the Treasurer, Sir John William Lubbock, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Dr. Arnott and Mr. Hopkins made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Appointment of additional Vice-Presidents, Dr. Fitton declined to take up one of these appointments. Letters from James G. Graham, Whitehall, 23 December 1841, and from G. E. Anson, Windsor Castle, 13 December 1841, to Sir John William Lubbock, full text entered into the minutes: thanking the Society for congratulatory addresses to Queen Victoria and to Prince Albert. Letter from Lord Canning, Foreign Office, 18 December 1841, to Sir John William Lubbock, full text entered into the minutes: word has been sent to H.M. Consul in Egypt to recoup payment from the Pacha of Egypt for scientific instruments. Letter from Humphrey Loyd, Trinity College, Dublin, 3 January 1842, to Peter Mark Roget, full text entered into the minutes: acknowledging receipt of magnetical observations form India and Singapore. Letter from A. Milne, Office of Woods, 10 January 1842. to John D. Roberston, full text entered into the minutes: asking when the Society will be able to take possession of the Observatory in Kew Gardens. which is clear and ready; Council defers their answer until they have a report from a committee. Letter from George Biddell Airy, Royal Observatory, Greenwich, 11 January 1842, to Samuel Hunter Christie, full text entered into the minutes: requesting copies of the Philosophical Transactions for the library of the Imperial Observatory at Pulkowa [St. Petersburg], request granted from 1824 to present. List of candidates for Foreign Membership fro selection at the next meeting. List of bills for payment. Mr. Hodgkinson's request to insert his paper on the strength of pillars to a work he is publishing, granted. The Marquis of Westminster requested an extension to admission to the Fellowship, granted. Application in favour of Ardeseer Cursutjee, newly elected and resident in India, to be added to the list of Fellows, granted. The Treasurer empowered to call a special meeting of the Royal Society in case of the King of Prussia being able to sign the Charter Book; if unable to atend in person, a deputation of Council, with the Duke of Sussex to wait upon the King. Notice given that a resolution would be moved at next Council, that each certificate of candidature should be signed by one of the Secretaries before being read to the Society.
