Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Bowman; John Frederic Daniell; Sir John William Lubbock; Dr. Jonathan Pereira; Peter Mark Roget; James Walker; the President, Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Letter from G.W. Hope, Downing Street, 11 July 1844, to the Marquess of Northampton, full text entered into the minutes: he intends to take ythe earliest opportunity to comunicate with the Governor of Ceylon on the proposed magnetic observatory; as soon as his report is received, a decision will be made on any contributions of revenues. Report of the Assistant Secretary on the state of the Royal Society Library, 10 October 1844: with a list of books missing from the Library and a list of books borrowed, but not returned; the Assistant Secretary instructed to write to Fellows for return of books and the lists of missing items referred to the Library Committee. Letter from Sir John Barrow, Admiralty, 29 May 1844, to Peter Mark Roget, full text entered into the minutes: presenting a box and list of specimens from Borneo collected by Sir Edward Belcher of HMS Samarang; resolved that the specimens to be sent to the British Museum. Letter from Charles Few, 6 September 1844, to Sir John William Lubock, full text entered into the minutes: with copy correspondence and minutes of House of Lords proceedings relating to Byron vs. Cooper and the Mablethorpe estates. Resolved that the several Scientific Committees be asked for nominations for the Copley Medal; that the Committee of Mathematics and the Committee of Chemistry be asked to nomimate candidates for Royal Medals; and the Committee of Physics be consulted on the award of the Rumford Medal. List of President, Officers and Members of Council selectedto be recommended for election for the ensuing year. Resolved that for the convenience of Fellows, the Anniversary Meetings to be held at 4.00pm instead of 1.00pm.
