Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Report of the Committee to consider the award of a Royal Medal in Geology and Mineralogy, recommending the award of the medal to Charles Lyell for the work 'Principles of Geology', stating their grounds and declining to express an opinion on the controverted positions in the book. The Committee recommended that the 1837 Royal Medal be awarded to the best paper on the subject of 'Contributions towards a system of geological chronology, founded on an examination of fossil remains and their attendant phenomena'. Resolutions adopting the Committee's recommendations, with the reasons for the award to Lyell to be reported to the Society. George Peacock reported on behalf of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Council agreed a report to be read by the Secretary to the Anniversary Meeting. |
