TitleMinutes of a meeting of Council of the Royal Society
Date14 September 1838
DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: John George Children; Samuel Hunter Christie; Spencer Joshua Alwyn Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton; William Haseldine Pepys; John Forbes Royle; the Treasurer, Francis Baily, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Marquis of Northampton signed the declaration in lieu of the oath and took his seat in Council. Letter from the President, His Royal Highness Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex, Kensington Plaace, 17 August 1838, to Council of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: announcing his intention of resigning the Presidency, with reasons for doing so, and parting advice. In view of the small attendance at Council, with many members absent from London, consideration of the letter was deferred until full attendance could be assured: the Duke of Sussex to be asked permission to permit a copy of his letter to be circulated to Council Members.
