Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Dean of Ely made and subscribed to the Declaration in lieu of the Oath as a new Member of Council. Letter from Sir William E. Logan of Montreal, of the the Local Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, inviting participation in their Montreal meeting next August, with free passage offered to a representative of the Royal Society: the Secretary was directed to reply with thanks, but that the Society was unable to take advantage of the courteous offer. Letter from Captain Frederick L. McClintock, United Services Club, Pall Mall, 2 May 1857, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: noting that he had accepted command of Lady Franklin's private expedition in quest of the missing ships Erebus and Terror; he requests Council's advice and instruction on what observations to make during the voyage, and asks for a small sum to defray the costs of any meteorological instruments; the letter was referred to a committee set up for the purpose and up to £50 was allowed from the Donation Fund for instruments. Letter from the Reverend T. Simpson Evans respecting the delivery of the Fairchild Lecture in Shoreditch Church; arrangements to use an alternative church might be made if necessary. Candidates for the award of Royal Society Medals were proposed and seconded, with citations. |
