The Secretary stated that he had sent to the Treasury a return for the year ending 5 April 1856 on Government Grant expenditure, full text entered into the minutes. The Royal Society concurred on the propriety of taking the case of the Handley bequesdt to the Court of Chancery to determine the right to the balance of money received from the Staines and Wokingham Railway Company: and the capacity of the Royal Society to take landed estate under devise. The Reverend R. Walker was appointed Fairchild Lecturer for the ensuing year. Sir Philip Malpas de Gray Egerton was elected a Trustee of Sir John Soane's Museum. Letter from Lord Panmure indicating his desire to reoccupy room sin Burlington House for holding examinations in January: the request acceded to, on condition hat the Librarian should have access to books in the Lower Library. Letter from Viscount Enfield requesting permission for an artist to copy a portrait of Sir Isaac Newton, permission granted. Letter from the Earl of Rosse enclosing a letter from Lord de Ros, requesting that Mr. Stanford be allowed to republish Admiral Beechey's tidal chart of St. George's Channel: the request agreed to on condition that the map was not altered, that it sould indicate the source and that a proof should be sent in advance for collation with the original. |
