Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Robert Brown; Samuel Hunter Christie; Sir Henry De La Beche; John Gassiot; William Hopkins; Sir Robert Harry Inglis; George Porter; George Rennie; Dr Peter Roget; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine; Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Sykes; the President [Spencer Compton] Marquis of Northampton in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: a letter from Professor Charles Ritter thanking the Foreign Secretary for his election as Forign Member (letter not reproduced in minutes). A letter from Spancer Hall, librarian of the Athenaeum club requesting a complete set of the Proceedings of the Royal Society (letter not reproduced in minutes). Thomas Wharton Jones granted extra copies of his paper on 'The Microscopical Examination of the Hepatic Ducts'. Newly elected Fellow Captain Henry Clerk granted an extension to the period allowed for his official admission as he is out of the country on military duty. One of the Royal Medals for 1848 to be awarded to Charles James Hargreave on the recommendation of the Mathematics Committee, for his paper 'On the Slution of Linear Differential Equations'. The Copley Medal to be awarded to John Couch Adams for 'his investigations relative to the disturbances of Uranus, and for his application of the inverse problem of perturbation thereto'. The Bakerian Lecture for 1848 to be Michael Faraday's paper 'Experimental Researches in Electricity, 22nd Series'. Bills for running costs of the Society to be paid to names suppliers, including for printing, engraving, paper, bookbinding, stationery, shipping, furniture, legal expenses etc.
