| Description | Printed minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.
Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; Sir James Clark; John Gassiot; Sir William Robert Grove; Leonard Horner; Sir Robert Harry Inglis; Sir Charles Lyell; Dr William Allen Miller; Richard Owen; George Rennie; Dr Peter Roget; the President [William Parsons] Earl of Rosse in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: A letter from J Parker of the Admiralty, dated 26 Nov 1849, in reply to the Council's letter of 16 Nov regarding the efforts to recover lost the Franklin expedition (letter reproduced in full in minutes). A letter from the Astronomer Royal, George Biddell Airy, to the Committee of Astronomy dated 7 May 1849, regarding [Joshua] Cooper's catalogue of zodiacal stars which he recommends should be printed but suggests this should be done through the Royal Astronomical Society which he considers should deal with observations whilst the Royal Society is the place for theories or fundamental prinicpals to be submitted (letter reproduced in full in minutes, see also CMP/2/45). The Bakerian Lecture for 1850 to be delivered by Thomas Graham. The Royal Medal for Geology to be awarded to [Gideon] Mantell as recommended by the Committee of Geology, for 'his paper on the Iguanadon, published in the Philosophical Transactions for the year 1848, being a continuation of a series of papers by him on the same fossil reptile, by which he has rendered eminent services to Geology'. A letter from Dr Robert Remak of Berlin, dated 19 Oct 1849, regarding his papers on anatomy and physiology including a paper 'Upon the Independent System of Intestinal Nerves' 1847 which he previously sent to the Society and which was not mentioned in a paper on the same subject by [Robert] Lee 'On the Ganglia and Nerves of the Heart' published in Philosophical Transactions (letter reproduced in full in minutes). Accepted the request from the Dean of Herford [John Merewether] to retire from the Royal Society.
