| Description | Printed minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.
Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas Bell; William Bowman; Sir Benjamin Brodie; Charles Brooke; John Gassiot; Sir John Frederick William Herschel; Professor William Hallowes Miller; Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Portlock; Captain William Henry Smyth; Edward Solly; William Spence; Dr Nathaniel Wallich; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sabine, Vice President and Treasurer, in the chair.
Among matters discussed or noted: Gassiot, moved and Solly seconded the appointment of Scientific Committees for specified disciplines but the motion was lost. Correspondence from Sabine and Joseph Henry, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, petitioning the Royal Society to facilitate arrangements for the exchange of scientific publications between UK learned Societies and the United States of America, for 'the great public importance of facilitating...the rapid intercommunication of the scientific researches and discoveries made in different countries' [two letters reproduced in minutes with further extract of a letter from Henry Bulwer, Minister at Washington]. A letter from William Allen Miller, dated 12 Jan 1852, requesting some of the palladium given to the Royal Society by William Hyde Wollaston for use in Miller's research into the manufacture of standard weights, relative to his government grant funded investigation of meteorological instruments [letter reproduced in full in minutes]. The accumulation of the Wintringham Fund to be paid to the Foundling Hospital and the bequest further discussed at the next meeting.
