Commencing with a list of Council members present: Lionel Smith Beale; William Bowman; Commander Frederick John Owen Evans; John Peter Gassiot; John Edward Gray; Thomas Archer Hirst; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Odling; Sir John Rennie; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, Lieutenant-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. List of President, Officers and Members of Council to be recommended to the Royal Society at the Anniversary Meeting, for service in the ensuing year. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Copley Medal awarded to Professor Julius Plucker for work in analytical chemistry, magnetism and spectral analysis; a Royal Medals to William Huggins for researches in astronomical spectra; a Royal Medal to William Kitchen Parker for reseraches in comparative osteology; the Rumford Medal to M. Armand Hippolyte Louis Fizeau for optical researches. Nomination of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. Letter from Dr. Samuel Crompton of Manchester, presenting an artist's proof of an engraving by Thomas Onslow Barlow of a portrait of Isaac Newton by Godfrey Kneller, thanks given. List of salaries and wages paid to Officers and staff of the Royal Society. Bill for payment, for lithography and printing.
