DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Lionel Smith Beale; William Bowman; Commander Frederick John Owen Evans; Edward Frankland; John Peter Gassiot; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; Sir John Rennie; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; the President, Lieutenant-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the Auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. The Reverend T. Simpson Evans appointed as Fairchild Lecturer for the ensuing year. Dr. Hooker appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee in place of Professor Sylvester. £10 from the Donation Fund granted to Mr. B. Loewy for experiments in thermometer correction. Letter from John Gregory, 52 Green Street, Park Lane, 27 November 1866, to Edward Sabine, full text entered into the minutes: in rearranging his library, a volume of notes on Newton's Principia by David Gregory has been found; Sir Henry Holland has indicated that this, and a treatise on solid geometry by D.F. Gregory would be acceptable for presentation to the Royal Society; thanks returned from President and Council. Letter from Sir John Lubbock, 28 November 1866, to William Sharpey, full text entered in to the minutes: he has been considering what to do with his father's library, since none of the family have his mathematical talents; many books wil be duplicated at the Royal Society but he asks if the Society would like to make a selection, by marking Mr. Hirst's catalogue, thanks returned. Mr. Boyd Dawkins was allowed to withdraw his paper on the dentition of rhinocerus leptorhinus. Application from the Female School of Art to hold distribution of prizes at Burlington House, granted. The Persian manuscript 'Javidan Khird' from the Ashburner collection to be loaned to E.H. Palmer of Cambridge, in order to translate it. Letters were read from Professor Plucker and M. Fizeau acknowledging the award of medals.
