Commencing with a list of Council members present: Lionel Smith Beale; William Bowman; Edward Frankland; John Hall Gladstone; William Huggins; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Lassell; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; William Sharpey; Colonel William James Smythe; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; Thomas Thomson; William Tite; Sir William Page Wood; the President, Lieutenant-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The Secretary stated that plans of the new apartments at Burlington House had been provided by Messrs. Banks and Barry to be approved as quickly as possible: the President and Secretary had signed the plans accordingly. Leave granted to St. George's Rifles and the Committee of the Cambridge Local Board Examinations to use the Meeting Room in Burlington House. The Secretary reported that 15 of the Society's portraits had been lent for the ensuing National Portrait Exhibition at South Kensington. Leave granted to Mr. Merrifield to republish his Proceedings paper in the Transactions of the Institute of Naval Architects. Proceedings granted to MM. Barral and Flammarion in exchange for the Presse Scientifique et Industrielle. Proceedings granted to the Meteorological Committee's Office in Calcutta, in exchange for their publications. Candidates for Fellowship of the Royal Society were considered and adjourned to the next meeting.
