DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Lionel Smith Beale; William Bowman; Commander Frederick John Owen Evans; John Hall Gladstone; William Huggins; William Lassell; William Hallows Miller; Andrew Crombie Ramsay; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; Sir William Page Wood; the Treasurer and Vice-President, William Allen Miller, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. The Reverend Dr. Stebbing appointed as Fairchild Lecturer for the ensuing year. Sir Philip De Malpas Gray Egerton elected a Trustee of Sir John Soane's Museum. Dr. Carpenter appointed a member of the Scientific Relief Committee in place of Professor Huxley. Letter from Dr. Hirst, requesting a small grant from the Donation Fund to defray the costs of procuring facsimile documents by phototzincography, pertaining to the Pascal-Newton controversy: a sum not exceeding £25 granted. A donation of 2 guineas was made to the Parochial Schools of Mablethorpe. Permission was granted to Dr. Robert Angus Smith to make a copy of his paper in the archives. Dr. Roscoe appointed Bakerian Lecturer for the ensuing year, noting that 19 December would be a convenient date for him to lecture.
