Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The President stated that he had summoned the meeting to consider arrangements to be made at Burlington House, pending the erection of new buildings for the Royal Society and other societies. He laid before Council a proposal submitted by the Royal Academy and a letter from Messrs. Banks and Barry. Proposal headed 'Burlington House', accompanied by two plans [not present] by Sidney Smirke, 19 May 1868, full text entered into the minutes: proposing to erect a temporary covered walkway from the Piccadilly front of Burlington House to the main entrance across the quadrangle, with other arrangements. Letter from Banks and Barry, 1 Westminster Chambers, 2 June 1868, to the Assistant Secretary, the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: on the construction of a temporary room on the west side of Burlington House, equal in size to the existing Meeting Room or Lower Library for books and other purposes of the societies. The proposals were considered and deemed acceptable on two conditions: that there should be no interference with the main building of Burlington House until either the new apartments are ready, or a temporary building is available; and that the passage through Burington House should not be used as a public entrance to the Royal Academy except during exhibition periods and as specified by Sir Francis Grant's letter. Draft letter from Edward Sabine, Royal Society, Burlington House, 3 June 1868, to the First Commissioner of Her Majesty's Works, full text entered into the minutes: relaying a copy of the resolutions. Resolved that Messrs. Banks and Barry be informed that their plan for a temporary room was approved in case of premature removal of the west wing. Leave granted to Mr. J.A.Phillips to copy his paper on the chemical geology of Californian gold fields and to M.F. Michel to examine the archives for notices of Denis Papin. List of bills for payment, for printing, lithography, and coals.
