Commencing with a list of Council members present: Frederick Augustus Abel; William Benjamin Carpenter; Frederick Currey; Warren De La Rue; William Henry Flower; Captain Douglas Galton; John Peter Gassiot; John Marshall; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; Joseph Prestwich; Captain George Henry Richards; William Sharpey; Archibald Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; Colonel Alexander Strange; the President, Lieutenant-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The attention of Council had been drawn to the resolution of the Government Grant Committee regarding ownership of instruments, apparatus, and drawings, the instruction was recast as an order of Council. Report of the committee appointed to consider the Admiralty letter on protection of ships from lightning, full text entered into the minutes: the committee saw no objection to the plan proposed by the constructor; their opinion was communicated to the Admiralty by the President and thanks had been returned. The list of candidates for Foreign Membership was considered and ballotted, the selection falling on Charles Eugene Delaunay, Alphonse DeCandolle and Louis Pasteur. Letter from Thomas Thomson, General Secretary of the British Association, Kew. London, 111 March 1869, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, Burlington House, full text entered into the minutes: Council of the British Association had been requested to urge upon Government the necessity of fixing by bench-marks, levels and positions of elevations of 1 degree over sea-level and 2 degrees in relation to changes of coastline and ice-masses, requesting the Royal Society's support for the proposal; Council to answer that the Society appreciated the importance of the subject, and as a preliminary to action a report should be drawn up to ascertain what existing data there was and what further information was required. Letter from John K. Ingram, Secretary of Council of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, 9 March 1869, to the Secretaries of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: requesting if the former arrangement of receiving 100 copies of the Proceedings might be continued; referred to the Officers for consideration. Application from the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science proposing an exchange of publications: granted Proceedings in exchange for the Association's Transactions. The Clerk's salary of Henry B. Wheatley raised to £150. Leave granted for the reproduction of a Proceedings plate of Mr. Sorby's, provided he approved. The name of Abbe Moigno placed on the list of free distribution of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers. Bill for payment, for binding.
