DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Frederick Augustus Abel; William Benjamin Carpenter; Jacob Lockhart Clarke; Frederick Currey; Warren De La Rue; William Allen Miller; William Henry Flower; John Peter Gassiot; William Hallows Miller; Joseph Prestwich; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; Colonel Alexander Strange; the President, Lieutenant-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The seal of the Royal Society was affixed to the diplomas of recently elected Foreign Members. Letter from Beaumont and Davies, Warrington, 23 March 1869, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: on the will of Dr. John Davy, presenting silver plate and a portrait to the Royal Society and enclosing extracts from a codicil to the will of Sir Humphry Davy and an extract from John Davy's will; the Reverend A. Davy enquired about the possible purchase of the silver centrepiece; several points were submitted to the Reverend Davy on aspects of the bequest; with an opinion by Archibald Smith, Lincoln's Inn, 10 April 1869, on the legality of ceding the centrepiece to the family for its silver value. The Treasurer stated that the committee appointed to consider the Davy bequest had requested the Master of the Mint to melt down and assay the plate. Lists of names of candidates for Royal Society Medals, the proposing and seconding to take place at a future meeting. The Officers had decided that the arrangement to distribute copies of the Proceedings to the Royal Irish Academy would not be recommended. Letters were read from Messrs. De Candolle and Delauney in thanks for their election as Foreign Members. Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings were granted to the Bureau de la Recherche Geologique de la Suede and Proceedings to the Edinburgh Geological Society. Bill for payment, for gas.
