Commencing with a list of Council members present: the Reverend John Barlow; Arthur Cayley; William Farr; Sir Henry Holland; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallows Miller; Sir Roderick Impey Murchison; Major-General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; Thomas Webster; Alexander William Williamson; the Reverend Robert Willis; Colonel Philip Yorke; the President, Benjamin Collins Brodie in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Nomination of Dr. Bache, Professor Helmholtz, Professor Kolliker and M. de Verneuil as Foreign Members confirmed by ballot. Letter from Mr. Fairbairn requesting permission to republish two papers from Philosophical Transactions with use of the copper plates and woodcuts, granted. Letter from Henry Cole addressed to Sir James Clark, proposing that the Fine Art Club should hold its twelve meetings per year in the Royal Society's meeting room, not acceded to. Adjudication of medals: lists of names of candidates for the Copley, Royal and Rumford medals, for proposing and seconding at the next meeting. Bill for payment, for engraving.
