DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

A typed errata slip inserted at this point states: '25 October 1860 and two subsequent meetings. Several paragraphs have been mixed up between the various dates, and one paragraph appears to have been omitted from the manuscript copy. This should be checked when using the printed minutes for this period'.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Sir George Back; Thomas Bell; Arthur Cayley; Sir Henry Holland; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallows Miller; Sir Roderick Impey Murchison; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; the Reverend Robert Willis; the Treasurer and Vice-President, Major-General Edward Sabine in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The corporate seal of the Royal Society was affixed to a power of attorney enabling the Society's bankers to receive dividends on new three per cent annuities. General Sabine stated that he has interviewed the President, who placed himself in the hands of Council in respect of the nomination for next year. An application from Mr. Clarence Hopper for permission to copy two letters from the archives, granted. Letter from Lieutenant Rokeby, sending barometer and thermometer observations, transmitted to Admiral Fitzroy. Letter from Mr. Le Neve Foster stating that the Societe d'Encouragement of Paris desired to exchange publications, acceded to. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Copley Medal vote was tied between Professors Agassiz and Bunsen and the decision was adjourned; Royal Medals awarded to William Fairbairn and to Augustus Waller; the Rumford Medal awarded to J. Clerk Maxwell.
