DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Arthur Cayley; William Farr; William Hallows Miller; Sir Roderick Impey Murchison; William Sharpey; George Gabriel Stokes; Alexander William Williamson; Sir William Page Wood; Colonel Philip Yorke; the Treasurer and Vice-President, Major-General Edward Sabine in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Report of the auditors of the Treasurer's accounts. The Reverend T. Simpson Evans, Vicar of St. Leonard's, Shoreditch, appointed Fairchild Lecturer. The sum of £50 from the Scientific Relief Fund granted to William Hutton of West Hartlepool, on the resolution of the Committee. Letter from George T. Doo desiring to withdraw from the Royal Society: the resignation accepted. Letter from Frederick Crace-Calvert requesting permission to copy his paper on metals and alloys deposited in the archives, acceded to. Philosophical Transactions for 1840 granted as an exchange with the Societe d'Encouragement of Paris. Letter from R.W. Bunsen giving thanks for the Copley Medal award and regretting that he cannot attend personally to receive it, due to his health.
