DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Arthur Cayley; Thomas Graham; Sir Henry Holland; Thomas Henry Huxley; Sir John George Shaw Lefevre; William Hallows Miller; James Paget; Joseph Prestwich; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Colonel Philip Yorke; the Treasurer and Vice-President, Major-General Edward Sabine in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. New Members of Council made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Letter from the Reverend T. Simpson Evans, accepting the appointment of Fairchild Lecturer. Letter from the Secretary of the Treasury addressed to the President, asking if it would be convenient for the Fine Art Club to hold their conversazioni in the apartments of the Royal Society, and the reply of the President stating that Council has already ruled that they could not accede to the Club's wishes. Reappointment of the Library Committee, with a list of members and terms of reference. A memorial was read from Mr. Weld on his present duties and salary, with notes by the President and Treasurer, the matter adjourned to the next meeting. Council gave assent to a proposal from the Smithsonian Institution for the appointment of Mr. White as Smithsonian agent in London for scientific publications.
