DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Arthur Cayley; William Fairbairn; William Farr; Sir Henry Holland; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallows Miller; James Paget; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Arthur William Williamson; Colonel Philip Yorke; the Vice-President, Thomas Graham, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from the Marquis d'Azeglio, acknowledging the receipt of the Sanskrit manuscript lent to Chevalier Gorresio. The Foreign Secretary announced the vacancy in Foreign Members created by the death of Professor Tiedemann. Letter from the Secretary of the Universal Private Telephone Company requesting permission to erect a pole on Burlington House to support wires, the application referred to the Officers. Council considered the vacancy of President and on the motion of Sir Henry Holland, an application to be made to General Sabine, to nominate him at the next election. Volumes of Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings allowed to academies at Palermio and Veneto. Subscriptions of £350 received for the Scientific Relief Fund to be invested in securities. Bill for payment, for coals.
