DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Couch Adams; Arthur Cayley; Hugh Falconer; Sir Henry Holland; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallows Miller; James Paget; Major-General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Arthur William Williamson; the President, Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The Secretary stated that the hot water pipes for the basement strong rooms had been satisfactorily installed and that the Office of Works had taken measures to correct the damp and had renewed woodwork. Letter from the Clerk of the Society of Apothecaries, requesting to know Council's decision regarding Chelsea Physic Garden: the Master and Wardens of the Society to be informed that Council of the Royal Society are not in a position to take any steps in the matter until they receive a notice of proceedings on the part of the heirs of Sir Hans Sloane. Letter from Norton Shaw, Assistant Secretary to the Royal Geographical Society, 5 October 1861, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: asking permission to use rooms in Burlington House during the next session, the request acceded to. Ferdinand Muller granted an extension of time for admission into the Society. £15 from the Donation Fund granted to Mr. Albany Hancock to aid his researches into the anatomy of cephalopoda. Robert Mallet requested seperate copies of the paper by his son, Dr. W. Mallet on cotton culture: the types were now distributed, but would be set up again at the expense of the Society, all future applications of this sort to be made in writing. The national standards of weights and measures in the custody of the Society were inspected by Council and found to be in good order. List of bills for payment, for gas fittings, engraving, books, and for other expenses.
