Commencing with a list of Council members present: John Couch Adams; Arthur Cayley; Hugh Falconer; William Farr; Sir Henry Holland; Thomas Henry Huxley; William Hallows Miller; James Paget; Joseph Prestwich; Major-General Edward Sabine; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; Arthur William Williamson; the President, Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from Thomas Henry Huxley, Apartments of the Geological Society, Burlington House, to the Secretary of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: due to an oversight, the Geological Society's request to hold meetings in Burlington House has been overlooked and he requests the use of rooms on indicated dates, the request acceded to. List of President, Officer and Fellows to be recommended to serve as Council of the Royal Society for the ensuing year. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals: the Copley Medal awarded to Louis Agassiz for researches in palaeontology; a Royal Medal to W.B. Carpenter for researches in foraminifera; a Royal Medal to J.J. Sylvester for mathematical science. Nomination of auditors of the Treasurer's accounts.
