DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Benjamin Guy Babington; Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie; George Bowdler Buckton; William Benjamin Carpenter; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; Captain Douglas Galton; William Hopkins; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; James Paget; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. New Members of Council made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Letter from the Under Secretary of State acknowledging the receipt of the address of condolence to Queen Victoria. The report of the Committee on the subject of Sir George Everest's letter was considered and adopted, with a copy transmitted to Everest, and the letter with the report to be published in the Proceedings. Draft of a covering letter from George Gabriel Stokes to Sir George Everest, full text entered into the minutes. Reappointment of the Government Grant Committee, with a list of twenty-one Fellows not on Council to serve on the committee for the present year. List of candidates for Foreign Membership of the Royal Society, three to be nominated for election at the next meeting. Warren De La Rue appointed Bakerian Lecturer. Letter from Mr. Cayley requesting £25 to be placed at his disposal for obtaining calculations in lunar theory, granted. Letter from Thomas Fairbairn, 23 Queen's Gate 12 February 1862, to Edward Sabine, full text entered into the minutes: presenting a marble bust of his father, William Fairbairn, to the Royal Society; the gift accepted with thanks. Captain Shadwell granted an extension of time for admission to the Fellowship. The Secretary produced letters from Joseph Jopling submitting a proposal to erect a tablet on the house in Kensington identified as that where Sir Isaac Newton died: Jopling to be thanked for the information but Council cannot offer co-operation in the scheme. List of bills for payment, for lithography, and for other expenses.
