DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: George Bowdler Buckton; William Benjamin Carpenter; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; William Fairbairn; Captain Douglas Galton; William Robert Grove; John Lubbock; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; James Paget; Joseph Prestwich; William Sharpey; William Spottiswoode; George Gabriel Stokes; John Tyndall; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. The Secretary reported that assent had been given for the Civil Service Commissioners to hold part of the examination for the Indian Civil Service at Burlington House. The President reported giving parts of the Philosophical Transactions to Captain Belavenitz of the Russian Imperial Navy, who is charged with a commission on compass observations. Letter from Professor Agassiz expressing thanks for the award of the Copley Medal. The nomination of MM. Cesar Mansuete Despretz, Frans Ernst Neumann and Ernst Heinrich Weber as Foreign Members confirmed by ballot. Lists of names of candidates for the award of Royal Society Medals, to be proposed and seconded at the next meeting. The corporate seal of the Royal Society was affixed to a power of attorney to enable the Society's bankers to receive dividends. £50 from the Donation Fund to be awarded to William Crookes for researches on thallium. The United Service Institution of Western India added to the list of institutions to receive the Proceedings.
