DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Benjamin Guy Babington; William Benjamin Carpenter; Warren De La Rue; Joseph Dalton Hooker; John Lubbock; William Allen Miller; William Hallows Miller; William Sharpey; Henry John Stephen Smith; George Gabriel Stokes; Charles Wheatstone; the Reverend Robert Willis; the President, Major-General Edward Sabine, in the Chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Warren De La Rue, as a new Member of Council, made and subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. List of twenty-one Fellows not on Council to be appointed as the Government Grant Committee. Letter from Thomas Graham, Royal Mint, 30 December 1862, to the President of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes: noting the inferiority of the Rumford Medal as a work of art and the defective condition of one die; Charles Wiener has provided plaster casts for a new medal design and could sink dies for £100; Graham submits the designs and recomends their adoption; thanks given and resolved that a new die should be prepared with Rumford's head on the obverse, and a committee appointed to consider further details of the work. The Foreign Secretary noted a vacancy on the list of Foreign Members caused by the death of Francesco Carlini: a list of candidates to be considered at the next meeting. Joseph Lister appointed as the Croonian Lecturer, the subject being the coagulation of blood. Letter from Lieutenant-General Monteith intimating his retoirement from the Royal Society. Resolution of the Committee of the Scientific Relief Fund, placing £25 at the disposal of Sir Roderick Murchison for the use of Mr. Joseph Graham Lowe, geologist formerly of Chippenham, approved. Bill for payment, for binding.
